Our Monthly Roundup details all of the action across the club. January saw all our sides in action; with a staggering 104 goals scored in 23 games.

Under 7s

After a brilliant start to their first season over the back end of 2019, Swifts were reseeded into one of the top divisions for the new year.

Their "spring" league fixtures began at Greystones, with a high-scoring draw against Combe Junior Sports (4th Jan). Swifts were well ahead at one stage in the game with goals from James Johnson (4) and Charlie Eyles (2), but they were pegged back in the closing stages. Nevertheless, a thrilling, positive start to the new division.

However the quality of the higher divisions showed two weeks later (18th Jan), as a talented Ducklington team inflicted on Swifts only their second defeat of the entire season. Swifts were very much in the game though and showed their quality - with goals from Hugo Hale and James Johnson.

Swifts were straight back to winning ways though, finishing off January with an impressive result against Brackley Town (25th Jan). Swifts shared the scoring around for this one, with James Johnson, Charlie Eyles, Hugo Hale and Isaac Brook all getting themselves on the score-sheet in an exciting showing.

Under 9s

The Under 9s have had a roller-coaster of a season so far, and began the new year knowing they had been given a real challenge - with their Champions Cup group for this season drawing them against some very, very strong sides.

After having the first week of January off as the Champions Cup took shape - they began on the 11th January, at Greystones, where they were beaten by Banbury Irish. Swifts struggled to get a foothold in the game against a very good side, seemingly slightly off the pace after their longer Christmas break - their goal in the match coming from a Jude Rutland penalty, which he won himself.

The following week saw another home game, and unfortunately, another difficult day (18th Jan) - Combe Junior Sports arrived and took the game to Swifts, who despite being much improved from the previous week, still fell short. For the second week running, Swifts' only goal in the game came courtesy of a Jude Rutland penalty - this time won by Ned Jackman.

A harsh month for the Under 9s was finished with another defeat, this time against a Clanfield (85) side who Swifts have already faced on a couple of occasions this season. In some respects, this was their best performance against them so far, particularly going forward - with Noah Poole on target twice, and Ethan Soper grabbing another for Chippy.

Under 10s

The set-up of the Under 10s' Champions Cup Campaign meant that it has turned out to be a quiet month for them, with the first and last weeks of January being without a fixture.

However they have made up for lost time in the two fixtures they have had - two wins, plenty of goals, and even more impressively, two clean sheets - a defensive trait not many teams have at this level.

Their first game of 2020 on the 11th January saw them travel to Highfield to take their first 3 points - with goals coming from Sam McCabe (2), Sammy Clews (2), Isaac Kedward, and George Meathrel.

On the 18th, Swifts got even better, and comfortably beat Brackley Athletic Jaffas in style - with a superb performance. Two goals from George Meathrel, another from Sammy Clews, and a first goal of the Season from Ivan Clements would have been enough on their own - but Brackley were blown away by an unplayable performance from Sam McCabe, who was seemingly involved in everything going forward, and grabbing FIVE goals of his own.

Under 11 Blacks

In contrast to the Under 10s, the Under 11 Blacks have had a busy opening month of 2020, with a fixture in all four weeks.

They began with a strong win over Witney Vikings at Greystones (4th Jan) - a team who beat them in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Swifts have made a clear improvement as the season has progressed, and it was proven in this game thanks to a goal from Stan Jackman, and MOTM Antonio Virk, as well as a solid performance defensively, as they kept their first clean sheet of the season.

Those improvements continued going into the following week (11th Jan), as Swifts beat Banbury United at Greystones - another side who they had lost to earlier in the season. This one was much more convincing to boot; with goals from Stan Jackman (2), Antonio Virk (2), Tyms Dang, Charlie Edwards, and Lucas Timms. Giovanni Virk also followed in his brother's footsteps, claiming MOTM.

Facing teams who had beaten Swifts earlier in the season had become a bit of a theme - they went into the same situation for the third week in a row on January 18th, with a game against Bicester Town Pumas. The winning run was ended for Swifts, but the vast improvements continued - with this game much, much closer than the reverse fixture. A beauty of a free kick from Jaydon Townsend, and a goal from Stan Jackman for Swifts.

However Swifts finished the month by getting straight back to winning ways - and in convincing style against Bloxham Rangers (25th Jan). Their second clean sheet of the month was complimented by goals from Stan Jackman (2), Charlie Edwards (2), Lucas Timms, Antonio Virk, Zachery Gray, Jonny Makinson and Jaydon Townsend.

.
Under 11 Whites

The U11 Whites have had a quieter month, having a break through the middle of January, and a fixture in the first and last week.

They began with a tricky tie against Kidlington, who inflicted a heavy defeat on them earlier in the season. Though Swifts were improved, it still wasn't enough to make a change to the result, with Kidlington running out deserved winners.

The fortnight's break clearly helped the whites' get their rhythm back though, they returned to action by earning a draw against local 'rivals' Hook Norton, who had also beaten them in the reverse fixture. Goals from James Williams (2) and Billy Rickard meant they came away from Greystones with their 4th draw of the season.

Under 12s

The Under 12s started 2020 with the dreaded away trip to Grendon, which is by far the longest journey in the Witney and District League, from Chipping Norton at least. They were a little off the pace for the game, presumably because of the Christmas break, but still managed to get the job done - running out 4-3 winners thanks to goals from Henry Clements, Joe Walsh, and Alex Goode (2). Two assists in the game meant Dan McAndrew earned the MOTM award.

The following week (Jan 11th) they were much, much better. They hosted Highfield Juniors at Greystones, who had already clinched the league title the previous week - Swifts were prepared to spoil the party though, and they almost did - giving Highfield their biggest test of the whole season, in a 2-1 win for the visitors. Swifts goal came from Joe Walsh, with the defensive performance of Jacob Kedward earning MOTM.

Under 15s

A busy, and somewhat bizarre month of football for the Under 15s. They have had a fixture every week through January, but they have only faced off against two opponents.

The first week (4th Jan) saw them rushed into a fixture against Launton at Greystones. They were scheduled to play both Home and Away against them in successive weeks, but no-one truly knew the reason for those fixtures. The first game saw them fly out of the traps, blowing their opposition away as they cruised to an 8-1 win, with an own goal, as well as goals from Ajay Itah and Cole Davies were joined by a masterclass from Freddie Rix - who controlled the game from midfield, and got himself on the score-sheet FIVE times in the process.

Swifts then faced the trip to Launton the following week (still completely unaware as to why or what for), and did the job once again. On a small pitch, with slightly smaller goals, which was cutting up in some awful weather, Swifts earned a 3-1 win, with goals from Cole Davies, Freddie Rix, and Rex Chiles.

Bizarrely, it turned out that the previous two games were "Development games" scheduled by the league to fill in the gaps before the start of the new Spring League. What made it even worse for Swifts, is that their first fixture of the new league saw them host... Launton. So, for the 3rd week running, Swifts set about beating Launton once again, but goals from Jerome Davies (2 and MOTM), Ajay Itah and Lewis Pretorius could only earn them a point, in a 4-4 draw.

In the final week of January (26th), Swifts could finally face some new opponents, as they traveled to Stonesfield. But as ever, there is always a drama - and Swifts went to the game with just 10 players, and no goalkeeper. Staggeringly, they battled from start to finish, and earned their first Clean Sheet of the season, in a 7-0 victory. Goals came from Ajay Itah (3), Rex Chiles (3 and MOTM), and Freddie Rix.

Under 16s

The Under 16s have been somewhat busy over January, with fixtures in the opening three weeks of the month.

They began with a 3-2 victory over Brackley Athletic in the league (January 5th), with goals from Jonny Carroll (2), and Felix Robertson. Despite not being a their free-flowing best, Swifts found away to win once again, putting them level on points at the top of the league.

The next game came the following week, as they faced Ducklington away from home (January 12th). Swifts were much, much better than the previous week, and cruised to victory, with goals from Ben Reeves-Smith (2), George Thomas, Felix Robertson, and an Own Goal giving them a 5-1 win. This put Swifts 2 points clear at the top of the league, although some teams below them have a game in hand.

The U16s rounded off the month on the 18th, with the second leg of their KO Cup Quarter-Final against Deddington. Swifts were comfortably ahead going into the game after their 7-2 win in the first leg, and as a result were expected to cruise into the Semis - but no-one was expecting what happened in the second leg; with four goals from Felix Robertson, three from George Thomas, three for Ben Reeves-Smith, two for Jonny Carroll, two for Jack Williams, and an Own Goal meaning Swifts were 15-0 winners (22-2 on aggregate). The Under 16s have a lot to look forward to - with the league run-in and a Cup semi-final to navigate.
